Here are three of my favourite pictures of Willi. The first is him having a wee at a spot that looks like it’s a regular latrine. Hyenas don’t cock their legs like dogs; more like cats, they crouch. But you can see Willi’s not averse to standing in his own urine, it’s probably good for tinea or whatever kinds of life forms they pick up while rummaging through the garbage. I felt like a proud parent taking a photo of Willi using the toilet. The second is Willi demonstrating how tough even baby hyenas are. They use rocks for pillows. The third is Willi mesmerised by the insects flying around a light and I just wonder what he’s thinking. It’s reassuring that he’s not always thinking about food, although hyenas eat termites so maybe he had moths for dinner on his mind.
