About

Marcus Baynes-Rock

I’m an anthropologist from Australia studying relations between people and urbanised spotted hyenas in Harar, Ethiopia. Here I’m interested in how people and hyenas co-shape society as social actors engaged in politicised, historicised, nightly encounters in the streets of Harar’s Old Town. I’m also interested in the wider world of hyena-human relations, how these reach back into evolutionary history and how they play out in various places.
